Designing to be read across a giant hall
Munich is where the scale of German trade fairs is most obvious, and that scale is the thing to design around. At a show like bauma or electronica, a stand is read from across a very large hall before anyone walks up to it. That changes what the design has to do first: height, the highest graphic line and clear sightlines carry the stand at distance, while the fine detail that only registers up close does its work later, once a visitor has already chosen to approach.
The common mistake is designing at human scale — a layout that looks complete on a screen — and watching it vanish on the floor of a hall that dwarfs it. None of the fix requires a bigger budget than the standard brackets; it requires designing for the volume of the actual hall rather than the dimensions of the floor plan.

Around bauma, BAU and the big electronics fairs the number of contractors moving on the ground at once is enormous, the marshalling yard runs at capacity, and the build and dismantle windows are tight and strictly enforced. So the plan runs backwards from the booked slot rather than forwards from the show date, and the crew is briefed on the access pattern before it leaves. On a large, high Riem hall you are allowed to build tall and rig generously, and at a mega-show you usually should. Getting it right — legible, on-brand, high enough to clear the neighbours — is one of the highest-leverage decisions on a Munich stand.
Rigging follows the same logic. A suspended sign or lighting ring that lifts your identity above the hall floor can be the single most effective element on a big stand, provided the hall and the venue's rigging rules support it. Knowing which Munich venue you are actually in
“Munich” does not always mean the main Riem ground. Some events run at the ICM congress centre or the MOC, which have their own halls, access and build rules that differ from the trade-fair centre. A plan built for the main ground does not necessarily transfer, and the difference is easy to miss when a show is simply badged as being in Munich.
Confirming the exact venue is therefore the first practical step — before the hall, before the design. It sets everything downstream: the access plan, the rigging allowance, the marshalling pattern, the ceiling you are working under. Getting it wrong is an expensive way to start a Munich project, and it is the one mistake that cannot be corrected on the floor.
Why the Premium bracket sees more use in Munich
The standard brackets — Essential from €4,500, Custom from €11,500, Premium from €34,000 — apply in Munich exactly as elsewhere, but the mix shifts. Because the shows are large and the halls are big, more Munich projects land in the Custom and Premium ranges than at a smaller venue. A stand that holds its own at bauma is usually a larger, taller build than one that does the same job at a compact regional ground.

Munich is the right design point in that chain: a structure built to hold its own in a Riem hall will comfortably fill Cologne, Düsseldorf or Nuremberg afterwards, whereas the reverse rarely works — a stand scaled for a compact ground looks thin the moment it lands at Riem. Design for the biggest hall on your calendar and let the smaller ones be the easy dates.
A mega-show is an expensive place to build something single-use, so reuse is often the more sensible economics in Munich specifically.
