How we work it

RAI Amsterdam is a connected complex rather than a single hall, and the differences inside it are what shape a stand. The modern Elicium and Amtrium sit alongside the older numbered halls, and ceiling height, rigging provision and the character of the space all change as you move between them. A design that sits comfortably in one can run straight into a height or suspension limit in another. That is why the first question on an Amsterdam job is the hall, not the square metres.

The second thing that shapes a stand here is RAI's own rule set. The venue ties more of the build to house services and venue-side approvals than many European grounds: rigging sign-off, mains electrical connection and certain build services run through the venue on its own deadlines. RAI's in-house requirements catch first-time exhibitors out more than the border ever does. Some services have to be bought through the venue, and the rigging sign-off is stricter than a few other halls. I build the stand to those rules from the drawing, not as a retrofit.

The flagship fairs here pull a genuinely international floor, and that changes how the stand gets used rather than how it looks. I plan more seated meeting space at RAI than I would for a domestic show, because conversations run longer when someone has flown in for two days. It is a layout decision and it has to be made before the design is fixed, not squeezed in afterwards.

The Elicium and the old numbered halls are different animals for rigging. I confirm the exact hall before I detail anything that hangs.

Where RAI sits, and how its visitors arrive

RAI sits in Amsterdam Zuid, inside the city rather than on a ring-road site, with its own station on the doorstep and a direct rail connection to the airport. That location does more to shape an exhibitor's week than it first appears. Visitors walk in from a platform rather than out of a car park, they arrive spread across the day rather than in a single morning wave, and a substantial share of them have flown in that morning for a two-day visit. The floor fills differently here, and it empties differently.

For the stand, the practical consequences are orientation and stamina. The halls feed from a connected concourse, so the direction visitors enter from is knowable in advance and it decides which face of your plot is really the front — worth confirming against the floor plan before the layout is fixed rather than after. And because a large part of the audience is here for two full days rather than a passing hour, a stand that offers somewhere to sit and talk earns more than one built purely to stop people in the aisle.

RAI's in-house rules are the real planning factor
