A venue in the middle of the city, and what that does to your day
Most large German grounds are built on the edge of town, reached by car or by a dedicated rail spur, and their visitors arrive in a wave and leave in one. Hamburg Messe is not that. The halls sit beside Planten un Blomen with Dammtor a short walk away and the Messehallen U-Bahn station at the door, which means the show is embedded in a working city rather than parked next to it.
The consequence for exhibitors is a floor that breathes rather than empties. Visitors leave for a lunch appointment in the Neustadt and come back, or arrive late morning because they had a meeting in the city first. Stands that plan for a single peak and treat the afternoon as wind-down consistently underuse the ground. We plan Hamburg stands for a long, uneven day: seating that stays comfortable for hours, refreshment that still works at four o'clock, and enough staffing rotation that the team taking the second conversation is as sharp as the one that took the first.
The A and B halls, and why the split matters before you choose a plot
Hamburg Messe is not one continuous hall run. It is arranged as two clusters, the A halls and the B halls, connected at concourse level, and visitors behave accordingly — most people work one cluster properly before crossing to the other, which means your side of the ground shapes how many of them reach you and in what state. Someone arriving in your hall at the start of their route is fresh and browsing; someone arriving after three hours is looking for one specific answer.
This is worth resolving before the floor plan is signed, not after. Ask the organiser which halls the show occupies, where the main entrance feeds visitors in, and where the catering and seating sit, because those fix the flow more reliably than any aisle number on a plan. Once the plot is known, the design follows from it: an early-route position can afford to be inviting and open, while a late-route position on the far cluster earns its keep by being unmistakably legible from distance and having something specific waiting when the visitor arrives.
SMM and the maritime brief: build for the long conversation
SMM is the show most people associate with this ground, and it sets the tone for how Hamburg stands are judged. The maritime industry buys slowly and technically. A shipyard, a classification society, an engine or propulsion supplier and an owner's technical department are all walking the same aisles, and the conversation that matters is not a pitch — it is a working discussion between engineers about specification, service intervals and delivery, often with three or four people around a table and a drawing between them.
That pushes the layout in a specific direction. Meeting capacity is the primary constraint on an SMM stand, and the honest question at concept stage is how many simultaneous seated conversations you need to support at eleven o'clock on day two. Everything else — the product display, the graphics, the open frontage — exists to get a qualified visitor to that table. We generally recommend a mix: at least one enclosed or acoustically separated space for the conversations that need privacy, plus open seating for the ones that do not, rather than putting the entire meeting allocation behind a door and losing the walk-up.
WindEnergy Hamburg: scale, weight and partner traffic
WindEnergy Hamburg brings the offshore and onshore wind supply chain into the same halls, and the design problem shifts. Exhibitors here often want to show something physically substantial — a bearing, a cable section, a blade segment, a nacelle component or a cutaway — and physical substance immediately raises questions that belong in the venue conversation rather than the design one: what the floor in your specific hall will carry, how a heavy item gets to the plot and where it can stand.
The second characteristic of this show is partner traffic. Wind is a project industry, so a stand frequently hosts a developer, a supplier and an installation contractor in overlapping meetings, and the same table gets used by three different combinations of people across a day. Stands that work here tend to over-provide slightly on meeting space and under-provide on display, on the reasoning that a component can be understood in ninety seconds while a project discussion takes an hour. A double-deck build becomes genuinely worthwhile at this show, since it puts the meeting rooms above the display and buys back the floor — subject to the hall permitting it, which is the first thing to confirm.
INTERNORGA: the show that has to be designed wet
INTERNORGA is the outlier on this ground and by some margin the most technically demanding stand to build here. Hospitality and food-service exhibitors do not simply display equipment; they run it. That means live cooking, refrigeration, coffee under pressure, tasting portions and washing up, and every one of those puts a hard service requirement into the design at the earliest stage rather than the latest.
Water supply and waste position, extraction, power load, heat, hygiene surfaces and a place to wash things are all decisions that have to be made before the layout is fixed, because they cannot be moved afterwards without redrawing the stand. Ordering runs to the venue's deadlines, and a late service order is one of the few genuinely expensive mistakes available at this show. Beyond the plumbing, INTERNORGA rewards a different visitor logic to the technical fairs: people are tasting, so they stop, and a stand needs somewhere for them to stand and eat that does not block the aisle or collide with the queue at the machine.
Aircraft Interiors Expo: scrutiny at arm's length
Aircraft Interiors Expo puts the cabin-interiors industry into the halls each spring, and the buying audience — airline procurement, cabin engineering, certification specialists and design teams — inspects at very close range. Seats get sat in, trim samples get handled, mechanisms get worked, and the finish of your stand is read as evidence of the finish of your product. This is the Hamburg show where joinery quality and material honesty carry the most weight.
It is also a show where a mock-up frequently is the stand. A cabin section, a galley or a seat row placed at real scale sets the whole layout, and the sensible sequence is to fix the mock-up dimensions and its viewing approach first, then build the meeting space and the circulation around it. Lighting deserves an unusual amount of attention here as well, because cabin materials are specified under known conditions and a stand lit badly will make good trim look wrong. We treat lighting on an Aircraft Interiors stand as a technical decision, not a mood one.
How much of the stand should be meeting space
Across the Hamburg technical fairs the recurring design argument is the ratio of open frontage to enclosed meeting space, and it is where most of the value on this ground is won or lost. The instinct is to keep the stand open, because open feels welcoming and closed feels exclusive. The evidence on this floor points the other way: buyers who came for a long technical conversation will not have it standing up in an aisle, and a stand with nowhere to sit converts a serious visitor into a business card.
A workable rule of thumb for a 40 to 60 m² stand at SMM or WindEnergy is roughly a third of the area given over to seated meeting capacity, split between one closed room and open table seating, with the display and the counter arranged so that the route to the table is obvious. Acoustics matter more than they look on a plan — a meeting room with a thin wall against a neighbour's demonstration is a room nobody uses. Where a footprint simply cannot carry a closed room, a well-placed high table with three stools and a screen behind it does far more work than another metre of graphic wall.
Custom, modular, and the biennial rhythm
Two of Hamburg's flagship fairs run on a two-year cycle, which changes the reuse calculation. A stand built for SMM will not be needed again for two years, and a design that could be redeployed at WindEnergy or elsewhere in the same period earns its cost far more convincingly than one built for a single week. This is the practical case for a modular system stand with custom elements layered onto it: the frame, the lighting and the structural pieces stay, while the graphics, the product display and the meeting configuration are reworked for each show.
For a single appearance in a modest footprint, a straightforward system build with good graphics and good light is usually the honest answer, and we will say so. For an exhibitor running Hamburg alongside other European shows across a season, the better investment is a reconfigurable design built to survive storage and rebuild — proper cases, components that go back together the same way twice, and replaceable graphic panels rather than fixed printed surfaces. We are also happy to say when a client should keep their existing stand and simply refresh it, which on a two-year cycle is more often than the industry likes to admit.
Coming back to the same show, edition after edition
The technical fairs at Hamburg have long exhibitor memories. Maritime and wind are small industries in the sense that matters — the same specifiers walk the same aisles every cycle, and many of them navigate the floor partly from recall, heading for a stand they remember rather than reading the plan. A presence that stays recognisable across editions is found faster than one that reinvents itself, and being found is most of the battle on a floor where visitors are working through a list.
The useful pattern is continuity of silhouette, material and entry point, with the content changing underneath: same recognisable form, new product story, new graphics, meeting layout adjusted to what the last edition taught. Each build is also an opportunity to correct something real — the room that was always occupied, the display nobody stopped at, the counter that turned out to be in the way of the door. Keeping that record between editions is worth more than any single design decision.
