A stand that has to work, not just look right
A Düsseldorf stand usually has to do more than look good — it has to function. The fairs here are technical, the visitors know their field in depth, and the stands that succeed give those visitors a reason to stop, a place to talk, and often something running to look at. That pushes the brief away from pure visual spectacle and toward functional space: demo areas, private meeting rooms, sample storage, room for real conversations.
It is a different priority from a consumer show, where the stand mostly has to attract and impress. Messe Düsseldorf is laid out as a ring of halls beside the Rhine, most of them at floor level with direct gate access, and that is a large part of why the heavy process fairs settled here. For a machinery stand it is the single most useful fact about the ground: a press, a moulding machine or a filling line can usually be brought in whole rather than broken into sections and reassembled on the stand, and the route from the gate to your floor is short. The newer halls offer column-free spans that suit a large machinery layout; the older ones carry a visible grid that a big footprint has to be drawn around rather than through.
The other thing worth establishing early is where your hall sits in the ring and which entrance feeds it. Visitors at the big Düsseldorf fairs arrive at the perimeter entrances and work inward, so a stand in an entry hall sees different traffic — heavier, faster, less committed — than one deep in a specialist hall, where the visitor has arrived on purpose and will stay longer. The CCD congress buildings alongside the halls matter as well when a fair runs a conference programme in parallel, because delegates move between the sessions and the floor at fairly predictable times. Neither of these reshapes a stand the way the machinery does, but both decide where the meeting space and the demonstration area should sit within it.
Designing for long, serious meetings
The buyers at a Düsseldorf fair tend to be there to do real business, and the interactions are longer and more considered than the quick passes of a consumer show. That makes private or semi-private meeting space one of the most valuable parts of the stand — somewhere a serious negotiation or a technical discussion can happen without the noise of the aisle.
